United, British Air Cracking Down on Hidden City Ticketing

Gary Leff gives some tips to help you avoid the crackdown and save money.

Hidden city ticketing is when you purchase a ticket with an extra segment at the end, but you never intend to go to that final city. For example, if you are in City A and you want to fly to City B, sometimes it’s less expensive to purchase a ticket A to B to C. In this case C is a third city that you do not want to visit.

Gary explains how it all works in his blog post.

Buy Iberia Avios With Groupon, Can Convert to British Air Avios

BA Avios are handy because reservations made with them (including for American Airlines flights) can be cancelled for only about $3. This compares very, very favorably with the $150 cost to cancel a reservation for the same flight made with AAdvantage miles.

You can purchase up to 100,000 Iberia Avios with a current Groupon deal, then convert them to BA Avios.

Groupon Selling Iberia Plus Avios (Again)

As an added consideration, you can purchase as few as 2000 IB Avios which is likely to protect any existing points from expiring.

Meanwhile, British Air is planning to resume flights to Tehran on July 14.

Airlines Letting Passengers Cancel Flights to Zika Virus Areas

As the Zika virus spreads from South America into Caribbean island nations (including the U.S. Virgin Islands), airlines have begun letting passengers cancel flights without penalty.

If you or your partner are or could be pregnant, call the airline to learn if you can cancel for a full refund. The airlines are changing their policies on this daily, so Hang Up / Call Again (“HUCA”) tomorrow if you do not get a good answer today.

You can see a map from the Center for Disease Control showing areas of the United States where Aedes aegypti and Aedes albopictus mosquitoes capable of spreading Zika virus are found.

Nations where the Zika virus have been found, according to the CDC:
